Ian MacGillivray

Ian MacGillivray was born in Inverness in 1964.

The light and colour of open landscape was Ian’s first choice of subject, being particularly drawn to the wild landscape of the Scottish Highlands and its ever changing atmosphere and mood. Amongst the deer in these infrequently visited hills and inspired by his many liaisons with stalkers, deer and stalking scenes became the subject to which he has so often returned.

The hills of Applecross, Blackmount, Coignafearn and Strathconan were frequent early haunts, and at this stage Ian’s work began to attract the attention of collectors. One such collector introduced Ian to London’s Tryon Gallery in 1992.

Back from the Hill. Tryon Gallery, 1998.
This debut exhibition took place in one room of the then Cork Street gallery, the adjacent room put him in the company of Balfour Brown, Landseer, Milais and Thorburn.

A Year on the Hill. Tryon Gallery, 2009.
At the heart of the exhibition was a series of paintings depicting the annual cycle of deer behaviour and habitat change over the course of four seasons. The series made the significant step of expanding the remit of the sporing artist beyond ‘the season’ to give a depth and range to the quarry subject never before depicted.

Paintings from the Wild Highlands. Tryon Gallery, 2011.
A growing interest in painting the sea has informed recent work, conveying wild coastal landscape in colours of all seasons.

Ian lives with his family in mid Cheshire. England.
