Charles Pears was born in 1873 in Pontefract,Yorkshire.
He was a British Painter and Lithographer. Between the years on 1914-1918 and again in 1940, Pears was the Official Naval Artist.
He exhibited between the years of 1904-1939 inLondon, culminating R.A, R.I, R.O.I and P.R.S.M.A status.
In recent times Pears’ paintings have ranged in auction price from £4,200 for his ‘American barque under way’, measuring 34 x 48 inches, sold on the 11th April 2000 by the Bristol Auction Rooms, to his ‘Aeger under light breeze’, measuring 23 x 35 inches, sold on the 3rd May 2000 for £13,000 through Sotheby’s in London.
Charles Pears was a keen sailor and was able to interpret the sea in all its moods. he was commissioned into the Royal Marines in the the First World War and was also an offical war artist. He published several books on small boat cruising. The Imperial War Museum and National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, have examples of this interesting artist's work. |
