Axel Amuchastegui

Axel Amuchastegui was self-taught and gradually developed a technique specially suited to his subjects. He painted in Chinese inks until the 1960s and then changed to using acrylics. He is one of the few artists who can paint fur, feather and background with equal facility.

In 1963 he showed at the Tryon Gallery, and had a further two solo shows at the gallery in 1965 and 1979. In the late 60s, the gallery published three large limited edition books illustrated by Amuchastegui, recording the mammals and birds of both the Americas and Africa.

Following his death in 2002, his home in Buenos Aires was turned into a museum as a memorial to his life and work. Examples of his work can be seen in the Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane and Tate Britain, London.
